Sauna or steam room for a Dubai villa?

Start with the experience you prefer

A sauna and a steam room can both belong in a private wellness suite, but they are not interchangeable rooms. Consider the experience you already enjoy and how the space will be used before selecting finishes.

The sauna brief

A sauna project needs a room and equipment specification: enclosure, timber, seating, heater or selected infrared system, controls, glazing, ventilation and electrical work. The exact arrangement follows the chosen system.

Ask for the desired capacity and seating layout to be shown clearly. Material, glazing and room construction decisions should be coordinated with the equipment selection.

The steam room brief

A steam room needs a coordinated wet enclosure with the appropriate build-up, waterproofing and vapour control, drainage, seating, door, finishes and steam equipment. It should not be treated as an ordinary shower with an added device.

The generator and controls need a suitable location and service access. Ask who is responsible for the interfaces between the room construction, drainage, electrical work and equipment.

If you want both

A shared visual palette can connect the rooms while keeping their systems separate. Plan doors, transition space, seating and any changing area as one layout.

• Confirm the usable capacity of each room.
• Identify the construction and services for each system.
• Resolve the space behind or beside the rooms for equipment.
• Agree the material palette without assuming identical build-ups.
• Allow for two sets of operating and maintenance guidance.

Compare complete proposals

An equipment price and a finished room quotation cannot be compared directly. Request a scope that includes construction, services, installation, finishes, commissioning and exclusions.

If the available space or budget supports one installation better than the other, refine the brief around that choice. A complete, well-resolved room is a stronger result than two compromised spaces.

Use a shared room brief to compare the options

Describe the intended number of users, the available space, the preferred location and the relationship with changing or shower areas. Ask each proposal to show seating, doors, controls and access in a way that can be understood from the plan.

Then compare construction, equipment, surrounding work and maintenance responsibilities. Material samples help define the appearance, but they do not replace a complete room specification.

When you are considering both

A combined suite can be explored as a coordinated design, with separate specifications for the two environments. Discuss service routes and equipment locations early enough to preserve useful space for each room.

If both cannot be resolved well within the available area, review the priorities. A comfortable layout with practical access is a better basis for a private wellness space than a crowded arrangement chosen from images alone.
