Define who should fit before drawing the bench

Start with the normal household use, not the largest number of guests you can imagine. Record how many people should sit comfortably at once, whether anyone wants to recline, and whether the room needs an easier entry or a more private view. A capacity label is less useful than a plan showing the seating positions you actually expect to use.

Harvia’s current design guidance suggests allowing about 60 centimetres of seat width per person and notes that a straight bench can suit a small sauna better than a corner or U-shaped arrangement. Treat that as one manufacturer’s planning reference, not a universal Dubai rule. Ask the selected supplier to develop the final dimensions and capacity for its room and equipment.

Compare layouts by usable positions

A long straight upper bench may let two people sit with space between them or one person recline. An L-shaped return can support conversation, yet it also introduces a corner and may reduce the length available for lying down. A U-shape can look generous on a mood board while feeling constrained once the heater, door swing and steps are shown.

Ask for at least two dimensioned options when the footprint permits a real choice. Mark the usable sitting and reclining zones, not only the timber outline. Check where knees, shoulders and feet would be, how someone reaches the higher level, and whether another user can enter or leave without everyone moving.

Coordinate the doorway with the first movement

Walk through the entry sequence on the drawing. Identify what a person sees, where they step, how they reach the selected bench and whether the door movement conflicts with another user. Include the route outside the sauna, especially when the room connects to a shower, changing area or cold plunge.

Finnleo’s current custom-sauna information presents the door, glass front, windows, benches and heater as related design choices and offers left- or right-hinged configurations within its own product system. Use that as a prompt to settle the complete arrangement early. The appointed supplier must confirm the door construction, operation and relevant safety requirements for the selected installation.

Treat glazing as an equipment input as well as a view

Glazing can make a compact room feel visually connected to the wider wellness space and can frame a garden or architectural view. Decide what should be visible from the bench and how much privacy the household wants. Compare clear, tinted or more private treatments through actual supplier samples rather than a generic render.

HUUM’s current planning guidance says non-insulated surfaces such as a glass door or glass wall are added when calculating the effective room volume for heater selection. That method belongs to its guidance, but the principle is broadly useful: do not add or enlarge glazing after equipment has been selected without asking for another check. Provide the exact glass area and room construction to the chosen supplier.

Resolve the heater and bench relationship together

The heater location affects movement, visual balance and the available bench geometry. Ask the supplier’s drawing to show the exact selected model, its guard where applicable, and the required relationship to surrounding construction. Do not reserve a generic square for equipment and assume any heater can be fitted there later.

If a design proposes integrating a heater into or beside the bench, request the manufacturer-specific detail and responsibility for coordinating it. The homeowner should be able to understand the intended result and access arrangement, while the appointed specialists handle the technical dimensions, protection, electrical work and installation instructions.

Keep ventilation, lighting and cleaning on the same plan

HUUM’s planning page links ventilation with circulation of temperature and humidity and describes supply and exhaust positions in its general guidance. The final layout must follow the selected system and local professional design. At concept stage, make sure vents have not disappeared behind a decorative bench proposal or been added as an afterthought after fabrication.

Show lighting, backrests, bench skirts and removable or accessible areas on the coordinated drawing. Ask how the floor and spaces below the benches can be reached for cleaning. A floating appearance may suit the design, while a closed skirt may create another visual effect; either needs a deliberate access and maintenance response.

Review materials where the body meets the room

Bench, backrest and wall materials can share a palette without being identical. Harvia lists several wood choices for benches and panelling, while Finnleo shows different wall and bench combinations within its own range. Those catalogues illustrate that a complete sauna can coordinate more than one timber; they do not establish suitability or availability for a specific Dubai project.

Request physical samples of the exact proposed materials and written care guidance. Compare colour, grain, tactile character and expected change over time. Ask the supplier to identify any coating or treatment and where it will be used. Avoid approving a wood species name alone when grade, profile, finish and source can materially change the appearance.

Use this pre-fabrication layout checklist

The final design review should bring the room, equipment and surrounding wellness space together. Keep any open technical point visible for the responsible specialist instead of turning a concept drawing into an implied installation instruction.

• Does the plan show comfortable positions for the normal number of users?
• Can the required sitting or reclining length be understood from dimensions?
• Is the doorway operation coordinated with steps, circulation and the adjacent room?
• Are glazing extent, privacy, view and frame or fixing approach defined by the supplier?
• Has the selected equipment been checked against the final room and glass area?
• Are heater, guard, controls, vents and lighting shown on the same drawing?
• Can the floor, bench undersides and relevant components be reached for cleaning or service?
• Are exact timber, glazing and hardware samples tied to the quotation and fabrication release?

Release one coordinated drawing, not separate decisions

Before fabrication, request a final layout with a date or revision that identifies the room dimensions, benches, door, glazing, selected heater, visible accessories and main service positions. Link the finish schedule and equipment selection to that revision. If the room dimensions change during surrounding construction, pause and ask what needs to be rechecked.
